Thanks for taking the time to share this insight.

I had forgotten about the cork boards until after the conference myself, and even twitter's @pyconvolunteers.

@DeanG:

The cork boards were leaned up against a pillar in the Green Room and were never put out. This was my fault as I was going to manage that and completely forgot about it.

Thanks.

Most of the volunteer coordination was shared between multiple people for the initial setup and for the tear down. Cosmin dealt with the wire tape down for instance, so when that work needed to be done, everyone knew to send people looking to volunteer to him. Having OPS and the Green Room and Registration all in one place mande this type of coordination very easy.

There were a number of times where people came in and wanted to volunteer and I was at a loss as for what to tell them to do. This was more due to the fact that everything was done! the bag stuffing happened so fast that is was often missed by many people.

With that said, we do need to do a better job with the volunteer coordination. The bulk of the volunteer work and coordination is needed starting the day before tutorials through Thursday evening, and then again on late Sunday through Monday.

Friday through Sunday, the volunteers army is not needed, and each department head has their own set of volunteers they manage. This is because those specialized jobs require prior planning and coordination and are in place by the time those days roll around (usually). For example equipment training for the A/V team and coverage plans for Registration.

I will cover all of this and much more in a post soon.

- Large board for people to post stuff (’Hey Bob, we are at Uno’s!’)

Was that done?

The A/V and Session and registration staff coordination seemed to go very smoothly and keep what people pay for the conference for going well. Great job!

Would you say the same for the "coordinators" staff? Maybe the alignment happened on IRC or during the tutorial days. I should've come the night before tutorials instead of before the conference.

The list of perks makes me want to volunteer. Unfortunately I'm not coming to PyCon this year (or any year, probably -- it's on the wrong side of the Atlantic).
