Doug,

Thanks for your note. Meetup removed your email so this was the best place to reach you. Give me a call during business hours or drop me an email.

Cheers,

Also, Corey was interested in help on getting the hang of functional programming. I suggested The Little Schemer because of the way they approach the material, but it's definitely not a book for all people and some folks really dislike it.

Matthias has some more information on the book on his web-site including a sample chapter:

 http://www.ccs.neu.edu/home/matthias/BTLS/

For people wondering whether the book will be interesting for them, looking at the sample chapter will probably help.

Regarding the bit about whether or not "software engineering" is really engineering or not, I suspect the question is less "why isn't software engineering a real engineering discipline?" (for various definitions of real) and more "why don't we as individuals and groups and companies practice software development in an engineering fashion?" I'm not sure I agree with the former question, but regardless, I think the latter one is the one many of us ask ourselves day to day.

It was cool to meet everyone who came. Hopefully when the semester is over, I'll have more time to attend more meetings, informal or otherwise.
